About Me

My name is Chhouk Tong Vatey, I was born in 1988 and live in Siem Reap, Angkor. I have been working as a tour guide since 2008 in Angkor Archaeological site as well as other tourism sites around Cambodia. Now I am still now studying English Literature at Southeast Asia University in Siem Reap.

I have 6 sisters and I am from the third in my siblings, we are orphans and we are supported by my uncle. My elder sisters are uneducated....because they have to work very hard with my uncle to support our family.

My Father was a soldier and was killed by Khmer Rouge Guerrilla during the civil war in 1988 when I was in my mother's abdomen. So I don't recognize his face.

Three years later in 1990, my mother married to another soldier and left me and my 2 elder sisters in homeland with my grandparents. She went with her second husband to the battles. in 2000, her second husband also passed away, so she brought my other young 3 sisters to homeland and then five years later, she died because of illness.

Amoung my 6 sisters, only me obtains Diploma of High School, my young 3 sisters still go to school.
To support our family, I had to quit my study to find job and I worked as a French Speaking Guide for Artisan D'Angkor for one and a half years and then I passed tests to become tour-guide for Angkor Archeological National Park.

Khmer Rouge regime ruled Cambodia for 3 years 8 months and 20 days and then Cambodia was liberated by Cambodia Front National Liberation and Vietnamese forces in  January 1979, but Khmer Rouge Guerrilla Forces still resisted against Communist country, which supported by Vietnam, so far the civil war still prolonged till 1999, which was the last year Khmer Rouge Forces integrated into the government.

As I know from my grand parents, we lost a lot of relatives in Khmer Rouge regime. After the liberation from Khmer Rouge in January- 07- 1979, new government had began developing our country with Empty Hand, it means Cambodia came to nil, all infrastructures were destroyed and demolished. About 3 million people were death because of killing and starvation; especially educated were killed. Phnom Penh City was full of death bodies and wreckage.

Because of Vietnam is Communist and liberated Cambodia that's why Cambodia had to become a Communist Country, even if, we didn't wish to be a communist.

The war still prolonged...., Most of young people were recruited to join the army. This caused I LOST MY PARENTS AND BECOME ORPHAN.

We have a very hard lives...now my obligation has to feed sisters and grand parents too. Education is equal for both men and women, but if we compare the percentage of man and woman, we find out the percentage of woman is much less than man, Why????
- Because of:
+ Tradition, the parents or family don't want their daughter get away from home for higher education.
+ The woman will become a housewife, even if she is educated..., she has to look after the kids, elderly parents, feed the baby...and cooking....etc.
+ The percentage of employment for women is very low, if we compare with men.
+ The rate of unemployment is high...
+ The women are very scared and shy to join social work.

Among thousands of tour-guides in Siem Reap, most of them are men. There are very few lady guides. I AM ONE OF THOSE A FEW.
It is not so easy to pass tests and become a guide, because I AM A LADY BUT I AM STRONG, SMART AND QUALIFIED ENOUGH TO WORK AS A TOUR-GUIDE. I am also encouraged by family.

I THINK I AM A FIRST LADY TOUR-GUIDE WHO OWNS THIS WEBSITE, MOST WEBSITES ARE OWNED BY MEN. IT IS NOT SIMPLE FOR ME TO CREATE MY OWN SITE. I have a lot of competitors and most of them are men BUT I STRONGLY BELIEVE IN MYSELF THAT I HAVE MY ENOUGH QUALIFICATION FOR BEING A TOUR-GUIDE.

Many ladies of my age could not do like me but EVERYTHING IS FROM MY HEART. I have to work for my big family. Even though it is very hard for me.
